How the citizenship interview works
What the official sources say.
- The invitation. Once the application is complete, the préfecture’s nationality platform invites you; the interview is led by an officer appointed by the préfet.
- Its purpose. To check your assimilation into the French community, in particular your adherence to the essential principles and values of the Republic.
- Documents. Bring the originals of the documents listed in your invitation.
- At the end. You sign the charter of rights and duties of the French citizen. The officer’s report and your file let the préfet decide what comes next.
- Since 1 January 2026. A naturalisation application also needs a pass certificate for the civic exam and B2-level French, spoken and written.
If you miss the interview without a legitimate reason, the application can be closed (Service-Public.gouv.fr).
For applicants waiting for their interview
Your interview is soon

Naturalisation, reinstatement or marriage
For citizenship by marriage, the ministry says the interview follows the same rules as for naturalisation.
You want to know where you stand
The quick report after 3 questions shows your strengths and what to work on, for free.
A real mock interview, not a quiz
All topics, as on the day, or just one: background and motivation, values of the republic, rights and duties, institutions and symbols, history and culture, living in france.
The officer speaks, you answer out loud
Each question is read out and shown on screen. Your answer is transcribed automatically; you can also type it.
It follows up when you are vague
Too short, unclear or off-topic? The officer asks you to be more precise, as at the préfecture.
A written report, answer by answer
Readiness score out of 100, feedback on every answer, a suggested spoken answer, French mistakes and what to revise first.
What it does not do
It does not grade pronunciation, predict the préfet’s decision or give legal advice about your application.

Pourquoi souhaitez-vous devenir français ou française ?
« Parce que je vis en France depuis huit ans, je travaille ici et mes enfants ils sont nés ici. Et aussi le passeport, c’est plus pratique pour voyager. »
You link your application to your life in France: work, children, years here.
Do not lead with the passport: talk about your attachment to the values and your wish to take part, for example by voting.
mes enfants ils sont nés ici→ mes enfants sont nés ici — in formal speech, do not repeat the subject with a pronoun.

Frequently asked questions
Is this simulator official?
No. Entretien Naturalisation is a private practice service, not affiliated with the French Ministry of the Interior, the préfectures or OFII. The questions are written from the official texts (the charter of rights and duties of the French citizen, the livret du citoyen) and the feedback is produced by AI: it is a practice estimate.
What happens at the naturalisation interview?
Once your application is complete, the préfecture invites you to an interview with an officer appointed by the préfet. It checks your assimilation into the French community, in particular your adherence to the essential principles and values of the Republic. You bring the original documents listed in the invitation and, at the end, sign the charter of rights and duties of the French citizen.
Is the interview in French?
Yes. Since 1 January 2026 applicants for naturalisation must prove B2-level French, spoken and written. The simulator’s officer speaks French and you answer in French; this English page only explains how it works.
How much does it cost?
The first 3 questions and the quick report are free, with no sign-up. To continue to 12 questions with the full written report: €4.90 per interview, or €9.90 for 5 interviews used within 30 days. One-time payment, no subscription.
